OVERALL DESCRIPTION
The system engineer is responsible for providing hands-on, day to day server infrastructure administration and operational support activities (mainly troubleshooting, performance tuning and monitoring, possibly backup/restore, installation, configuration, upgrades, patching) as well as to help develop solutions to complex applications problems, system administration issues or network concerns in managing global projects in support of research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Linux (primarily Red Hat and CentOS; other systems in accordance to skills) troubleshooting and performance tuning.
Windows (primarily Win2008 and Win2012; other systems in accordance to skills) troubleshooting and performance tuning.
Participate in systems support based on an on-call rotation model (local business hours only), answering server incidents
Perform preventive maintenance on systems and services
Skills permitting, perform troubleshooting and optimization activities on other types of systems (ESX, AWS)
Follow the defined incident management processes
Be a key member in local infrastructure projects and activities including but not limited to system patching, vulnerability remediation, system migration and optimization, disaster recovery planning etc.
Assist with local hardware life-cycle management.

Ensure a stable and well-performing system environment.
Apply professional competencies to administrate and optimize the assigned system environment.
Implement levels of best practice (price / performance etc.)
JOB DIMENSION
Member of a global Operations team involving ~20 people in a “follow the sun” model
Infrastructure deployed on all NIBR sites globally
Member of a local NX team involving ~ 30 people
The primary work stream is incident resolution; second to that are formulating proactive improvement proposals for infrastructure and coordination/collaboration with other IT teams and technical areas in the company
SKILLS
Mandatory:
minimum 5 years of recent experience in Linux administration in a corporate environment
expertise in task automation (good skills in scripting/programming – Bash, Perl, Python etc.)
excellent troubleshooting skills in complex virtualized and physical environments, primarily Linux-based but also mixed setups
fluent in English, both written and spoken English
Major advantage:
system administration skills for Windows Server (2008/2012) and/or ESXi
hands on experience on middleware troubleshooting
good skill in powershell scripting
ITIL knowledge and hands-on experience
Useful:
hands-on administration experience with public cloud services (Amazon AWS) in corporate environments
prior experience supporting a (biomedical) research environment
knowledge of monitoring systems (Nagios, Solarwinds, Splunk)
familiarity with revision control systems (Git, SVN or CVS) and configuration management tools (Puppet, Chef)
experience supporting Oracle DB servers (standalone / RAC) and storage (NFS / SAN)
experience in managing small / medium global infrastructure projects
basic understanding of programming languages (Java or .NET, PHP, SQL etc)
Understanding of research processes and scientific information and how they relate to Scientific Computing
Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
Self-motivated, proactive and a team player
